John Hatton to visit Wagga Wagga, endorse independent campaign, sign hospital petition
Independent candidate for the state seat of Wagga Wagga today announced that legendary independent and anti-corruption campaigner John Hatton will be visiting Wagga Wagga this Friday to endorse the independent campaign and sign the hospital petition.
"John Hatton has an unparalleled reputation as an independent," Dr McGirr said. "His visit is a timely reminder of just how effective an independent can be."
For 22 years as the Independent member for the South Coast of NSW, John Hatton delivered improvements for his electorate, but he also achieved something truly profound.
He instigated the 1995 Wood Royal Commission into the NSW police force, purging it of systemic corruption. A total of 284 police officers were adversely named, 46 briefs of evidence were sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions and by 2001, 12 officers were facing corruption charges. Seven police officers received jail sentences, including the former Gosford drug squad chief Wayne Eade and a former chief of detectives, Graham “Chook” Fowler.
John Hatton was named a National Living Treasure in 1999, and was awarded the Order of Australia for Service to the Community in 1999.
He cites his proudest achievement as having brought honesty to government.
John is running for the legislative council in the NSW state election. His website is www.johnhatton.com.au.
John Hatton will be at Joe McGirr's election office at 90 Baylis Street at 11am on Friday 11th March."John is very happy to meet with people at the office over morning tea," Dr McGirr said.
